I second...no, third the assertion. Impecunious students should get more help. Yay for "socialised education".

Not true! Half was from agreeing to work for a year after graduation, and about the other half was from making the SAT my bitch. Of course, I had to attend the state school in my backyard to collect on that... (It had nothing to do with race or gender. Don't be another whiny white man--you'll turn into Uncle Al. And NO ONE wants that.)

Yay for research jobs! The best way to put yourself through college. I wish I saw more available that weren't biological, though.

Us white, upper middle class mediocre-GPA (I hate everything non-science, like English and foreign language) male students lack the privilege to get the really awesome scholarships you speaketh of.

But I did get a research job with killer pay due to my <strike>belief</strike> delusion that I'm a specialist. Not $30K, but still a win! in my book.

I take it back, then - no money for anyone you stupid kids; My hardworking CEO dad has his income skimmed off and redistributed to support your bum dads. You have been an utter waste of all that foodbank infant formula we gave you.

Why irrespective of wealth? Shouldn't poor motivated students get extra help? (and this is not socialism). Otherwise they may not be able to attend even with the loan, if they are too poor to pay the difference. Rich students may be able to pay the extra amount from their own pockets.

Rule 1: Don't get married (at least to someone not a student).
Rule 2: Do really well in school.

Unfortunately my wife didn't follow either of these - we will be roughly $40K in the red when she is done, at a public school no less (6 years). If you can do really well, I think some of the better schools have really good aid, but if not, you might be up a creek sans paddle. I don't know if it would have been better elsewhere, although she wouldn't have had the opportunity to have English taught by someone who could neither speak nor teach English well (and not surprisingly, but I guess miraculously) was not a professor.

The reasoning goes like the students would take their class attendance and their grades more seriously if they felt they were paying for them with their own money. There are several problems with this line of reasoning - the price monopoly + the leverage the school has (and frequently abuses), the unequal wealth and stipend situation of students and so on.

I would like to see all undergrad students getting a fixed-amount loan from the government, irrespective of the wealth of the students faminly, the money that would cover something like 70% of average tuition and would have to be repaid only by the students that failed to graduate.

<B>Inert intelligence is the paradigm of institutional racism.</B> UC/Berkeley, Boalt School of Law, alumni (and, of course, alumnae) reunion. I was in the audience with my sweetie when it squeaked down from the podium. The only White boys in the room were up at the dias or significant others.

No competent person is Officially qualified for anything good in life other than to give, at gunpoint, to the deserving. Have a nice future.

After subtracting for tuition, I ended college about $30k in the black (without factoring in any money from four years lab teching). There are some AWESOME scholarships out there, for those who are willing to search for the money. Why should it hurt at all? ;)

(To clarify: about half that involved a contract to work for a year after graduation, which explains why I am in an analytical lab now.)
